The Doctoral School in “European Union Law and national legal systems” is a highly qualified scientific school, and a key element of the Department’s internationalisation policy. There are two curricula, both focusing on a plurality of subjects, all of which display direct or indirect European relevance.
In order to strengthen the internationalisation of the training project, candidates must spend a period of study and research at a foreign university for at least three months.
PhD candidates are allowed to write their thesis in languages other than Italian, subject to agreement with their tutors.

- LLM - Master Master of Laws in the Prevention and Suppression of International Crime at Sea (MICAS)

The international post-graduate educational offer of the Department includes the Master of Laws in the Prevention and Suppression of International Crime at Sea (MICAS).
MICAS is a Joint LLM programme in English, established by the Faculty of Law of the University of Malta and the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara.
The course, which lasts one year and is entirely in English, is intended for international, regional and national organisation officers involved in the prevention and suppression of international crime at sea. It is also of interest to young graduates who wish to continue their studies in the field of international maritime security.
During the a.y. 2022/2023, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the course may temporarily commence online until lectures can resume on a face-to-face basis at the University of Malta. The second edition of the Master, planned for a.y. 2023/2024, will then be held in Ferrara.Lectures will be held by academics belonging to both of the Universities, guest lecturers and researchers belonging to Macrocrimes - Centre for European Legal Studies on Macro-Crime, established in November 2018 by the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara. UN and EU Officers, as well as members of the armed forces, non-governmental organizations personnel, lawyers and other professionals with consolidated experience in the field of the fight against crime at sea will alternate as guest lecturers.
